The legalities of marrying in Scotland

If I am your marriage celebrant, your wedding ceremony with me will be fully authorised and legal. You’ll be relieved to know that you have very little to do or think about here.

Your responsibility

“It was an honour to have Judith marry us. The service she designed for our wedding was just perfect in every way.” Emma & John, Inverurie.

It is your responsibility, though, to contact the Registrar and inform them of your wedding details. This has to be done 10-12 weeks before the wedding date. Make an appointment in good time. The Registrar will tell you what documents to bring or send in.

At least one of you must attend personally in the week prior to the wedding to collect the Marriage Schedule (or Register).

This is the document that the two of you, your minister and your two legal witnesses will sign during your ceremony. We will decide how you will get it to me, or to the venue, safely and without having to worry about it. I cannot conduct your wedding without it being there!.

It must be returned by hand, or as directed by the Registrar, within three days after your wedding.

That’s it

There are no other legal requirements for to think about with regard your marriage if you have me as your celebrant. I will ensure that the wording of your wedding vows meets the legal requirements in Scotland.
